My 8 year old has started washing the cars of our family and friends in order to earn a little pocket money. It really isn't a lot but it teaches him the importance of work. Far too many kids these days get everything handed to them on a plate. If they want an Xbox they get it. If they want new clothes they get it.
It doesn't work the mind or the body if a kid doesn't work. I don't mean that we should be putting our kids up chimneys or down coal mines. But little jobs like helping out in the garden or drying the dishes is fine.
When people ask my son what he wants to do when he grows up he says he wants to have his own business with a big fancy office and lots of employees. He hasn't quite figured out what the business will be as it keeps changing everyday. Sometimes I wants to look after the grass in football stadiums and other times he wants to own a car showroom.
